Sullivan County EMS Statistics Based on data collected from 2005, Sullivan County EMS responded to a total of nearly 21,359 calls in the year. The average call volume is 1,780 per month with that number showing a steady increase over the years. The 2005 numbers show a slight increase over the 2004 call volume. SCEMS operates a total of 8 emergency ambulances and 2 convalescent transport units daily from 6 stations located throughout the county. The east side of the county is also served by 2 emergency rescue units staffed by EMT-I employees. In addition, the agency also operates Children's One ( Neonatal Transport Unit ) in conjunction with Wellmont Health Systems. Other units may be added as needed to accommodate special events such as racing and festivals. Including all full and part-time staff members, our agency now employees close to 100 people. We currently employee a total of 44 paramedics, 31 EMT's and 6 rescue technicians.
Our agency is trained in all areas of emergency medicine in the field
including rescue operations. Many of our team members have
certification in extrication, high angle rescue, dive rescue,
firefighting and aero medical operations. We have the people and
equipment to handle any event that arises.
Our region is served by 4
major hospitals including 2 level one trauma centers.
WINGS Air Rescue is our primary provider for on scene helicopter
services for critically injured patients. The service provides 3
helicopters with a highly trained staff to assist us with transporting patients
to skilled care facilities. Sullivan County is home to a variety of companies, which make training in Homeland Security a big issue for our group. Eastman Chemical Company and BAE ( U.S. Defense ammunition manufacturing ) are located within the county. Several other special needs plants are also close by including a major uranium plant located just 25 miles away in Erwin. Racing is big part of our area and Sullivan County is home to some of the largest racing facilities in the south. Bristol Motor Speedway holds two of the highest attended NASCAR races in the nation each year with a spring and fall race. The county population doubles during each event and Bristol becomes the 3rd largest city in the state. Other major racing events that are held here include drag racing ( Thunder Valley ) and motocross at Muddy Creek Race Way. Estimates are that more than 750,000 people come here each year just for racing events. Festivals are a big part of our county and attract thousands of additional visitors. These include Kingsport's Fun Fest and Bristol's Rhythm and Roots to name a few. These events increase our call volume significantly. |
